WASHINGTON –The MSSD girls softball team delivered a statement win with a dominant 14-1 victory over longtime rival Maryland School for the Deaf, marking their first win in the rivalry since 2018 and snapping an eight-year drought.
Maryland struck first with a 1-0 lead in the opening inning, but MSSD quickly responded and took control of the game. The Eagles put up three runs in the first inning, added three more in the second, and exploded for eight runs in the third inning to take full command. The game was completed in the fourth inning due to the mercy rule.
Sophomore
Maiyalene Utley led the hitting with two hits on the night, while freshman Vyoletta Santos delivered a standout performance in the circle. Santos pitched a complete game, throwing four innings with 10 strikeouts while allowing just one run on one hit.
With the win, MSSD improves to 6-0 on the season.
The Eagles will now head into spring break before returning to action on April 14 against Charles E. Smith Jewish Day School.
